So what do you do
To give you a little more info than that intro; in Disco Elysium you play a detective (allegedly. they say that's what you are) who's forgotten everything down to his own name. You're expected to solve a case in this state, but thankfully your partner Kim is there to assist you. If only because he happens to be assigned to the same case as you. But he does his best. Man does he try
As I mentioned different parts of your mind and body chime in at times during the game. Half Light, Empathy and Endurance are just some examples. The game rolls two dice to decide whether you succeed a (usually invisible) check which decides when and how often different aspects of your being will speak up. They're not necessarily right or wrong when they do, it's just how the human mind works. Also some parts have political beliefs. So uh, there's that.
Disco Elysium is a very mature game; I think it kinda goes without saying but still. You play a man with deeply rooted problems, addictions and traumas in a world that's both abandoned and being fought over by soulless superpowers to keep it under their thumb as they see fit. The place is full of life and many characters call it home, and as you play you learn more and more of the history of Martinaise and Revachol as a whole. It's all very well thought out, and with a fantastic sense of humor as well.
When should I play this game?
Spend some time Disco Elysium if:- You love character based narratives
- You're looking for a more mature game with a story and environment rooted in real history
